Super Safety Centering Block: Information and Install Guide
A Super Safety centering block (also called a lever centering block or spacer) is a small 3D-printed plastic part—typically made from durable PLA, PLA Pro, or similar material—that helps keep the Super Safety lever properly aligned and centered inside the AR-15 lower receiver's fire control group pocket.
It reduces lateral wobble or play in the lever (the external selector part), which can otherwise cause binding, misalignment, or inconsistent function—especially in lowers with wider M16-style (full-auto) trigger pockets. Many standard AR-15 (semi-auto) lowers have tighter pockets and may not need it, but it's often included in kits for reliability.
- Material: Usually black PLA/PLA Pro (3D Printed, lightweight, easy to trim if needed).
- Purpose: Acts as a spacer/bushing around the lever shank to maintain side-to-side centering during operation.
- Is a Super Safety Centering Block Necessary?: It depends on your specific lower's pocket dimensions and the Super Safety variant. Some builds run fine without it.
How to Install the Centering Block
Installation is simple and tool-free (drop-in during Super Safety assembly). Here's the general process based on common kits and user reports:
- Disassemble the lower as needed: Remove the pistol grip (for detent/spring access), trigger/hammer pins, and existing safety selector.
- Prepare the lever: The centering block has a slot or hole that fits over the lever's shank (the straight part before any bend or branding). Slide it onto the lever from the end. It typically doesn't go all the way down due to the slot size—position it so it sits in the pocket area to fill side-to-side space without interfering with movement.
- Insert during Super Safety install:
- Install the cam and lever into the lower (following your kit's orientation—e.g., specific grooves/channels aligned correctly).
- The block goes inside the trigger pocket, around the lever, to center it between the pocket walls. You may need to sand out the inside of the block to slide over the lever.
- It may require minor trimming/filing with a knife or sandpaper for a perfect fit in narrower AR-15 pockets (plastic makes this easy).
- Reassemble:
- Install the rounded detent, spring, and grip while holding components centered.
- Function test the safety positions (safe, semi, super/active) and trigger reset.
Tips:
- Primarily useful for M16-cut lowers; less critical (or may not fit) in standard AR-15 pockets.
- Some kits include a metal version (e.g., 304 stainless), but most are printed plastic.
- Always follow the specific instructions/video for your Super Safety manufacturer (e.g., Hoffman Tactical, AS Designs, Deez Nuts Tactical) as geometries vary slightly.
- Test thoroughly: Cycle the action, check for binding, and ensure smooth selector movement.
Safety note: Firearm modifications should be done by competent individuals. Improper installation can affect safety and function. Check local laws, as Super Safety/FRT-style devices face regulatory scrutiny in some areas. Consult your kit's guide or a qualified gunsmith.
